Winner, Best Kitchen — 2025 BDAA Awards

A beachside residence at Coles Beach in Devonport on Tasmania's North-West coast, designed to make the most of an exceptional outlook — ocean views across Coles Beach to the north, Don Heads to the west, and Mersey Bluff Headland to the east.

The brief called for a home the clients could grow old in: single-level living with as few steps as possible, supplemented by a lift, and a layout built around open, light-filled living. At the centre of the home, the kitchen, dining and lounge flow together as one connected space, oriented to draw in the sun and frame the coastline beyond. A butler's pantry keeps the main kitchen clear and considered — work that was recognised with a Best Kitchen award at the 2025 BDAA Awards.

Despite its outlook, the home was deliberately designed to sit quietly within its streetscape rather than presenting as a landmark, balancing a strong connection to the surrounding coastal landscape with genuine privacy from the street. A self-contained wing allows the home to accommodate visiting family or a live-in carer independently, while a simple, resilient material palette was chosen to handle the coastal environment with minimal upkeep over time.
